The county town of Louth, Dundalk has about 29,000 inhabitants. The origins of the town can be viewed to the west of the town itself - a large motte and bailey built in the later 12th century by the Anglo Norman de Vernon. This site has an early Christian souterrain, which was probably intended for refuge.
